Loch Ness

Edinburgh Loch Ness Trip Scotland Highland

Legends of the Deep

Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands, best known for the alleged sightings of the cryptozoological Loch Ness Monster, also known affectionately as "Nessie". It is one of the most famous lakes in the world.

The loch extends for approximately 37 kilometres (23 miles) southwest of Inverness. It is the second-largest Scottish loch by surface area at 56 km2 (22 sq mi) after Loch Lomond, but due to its great depth, it is the largest by volume in the British Isles. Its deepest point is 230 metres (755 feet).

The legend of the monster has roots dating back to the 6th century, but it was the 20th century that saw a surge in interest, turning Nessie into a global phenomenon. Whether you believe in the monster or not, the loch's stunning scenery and profound sense of mystery are undeniable.
