Urquhart Castle

Urquhart Castle Ruins on the banks of Loch Ness tour

History

Perched dramatically on the banks of Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle boasts centuries of turbulent history. The site has been fortified since at least the 6th century, though the castle we see today began to take shape in the 13th century. It played a significant role in the Scottish Wars of Independence.

The castle changed hands numerous times between the English and Scots. In the 14th century, it was occupied by the Clan Grant, who held it until the 17th century. Its strategic location made it a frequent target during clan skirmishes and national conflicts.

In 1692, amid Jacobite unrest, the castle was deliberately blown up to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. The ruins that remain today are both romantic and dramatic, offering panoramic views of Loch Ness.

Now managed by Historic Environment Scotland, Urquhart Castle is one of the most visited historical sites in the country, popular with both history buffs and curious travelers.
